To rest on Shavuot (Lev. 23:21)

Context: Shavuot is traditionally understood as the day God revealed the Ten Commandments to Moses at Mount Sinai, and by extension, the day that the Jewish people received the Torah.

Notes on Text: There are two speakers. One speaker is marked by bolded text. The other speaker is marked by unbolded text.

Although this is the last of the plays, I will write a reflection on the project in the next day or so. You can expect that final entry on Friday.

            a couple in bed

            they whisper in the dark

i think i found something

i’m asleep

i’m sorry

but-

i think i found something
something
something wonderous

i’m asleep dear please

but i found something

you can tell me tomorrow

i think i found the whole world

that’s nice

under cover of darkness
iridescent and sweet

you have to see this

mmmmhmmmh fine

what?

see?

can’t see

all righteousness all pain all divinity all iniquity all justice all personhood all all all

i can’t see anything

all of all all of all

i can’t-

it’s the whole world and i found it

i don’t see anything

you have to look closer

i’m looking closer

you have to want to see it

i want to see it

in your bowels do you want to see it in your bowels?

yeah

i was songless and unstitched but now-

show me tomorrow

you have to really look

i’m sure it’s lovely

it’s the whole world and i found it

come hold me
come hold me

there
isn’t that nice?
in your arms i feel-

and with you in my arms i feel-

yes

the whole world in my arms
iridescent and sweet
can’t you see?

mmhmm

there’s a flaming sword in my heart
and i worry by tomorrow it will be gone
i worry i’ll loose it if you can’t see it too
i have to show you or it will go away

kiss me

my mind cleans up so quickly
street sweepers come at first light and brush my thoughts aside
there’s a flaming sword in my heart and they’ll take that too
they’ll take my truth and junk it
they keep the crooked avenues of my mind spotless
and i won’t remember finding the whole world
unless you can see it too
can’t you see it?

can’t you see it?

can’t you see it?
