Act I

            an epic toy store

            Toys “R” Us meets Hearst Castle

            SALLY (eight years old) stands before a wall of boxed dolls

            she tugs at her MOTHER’s hem

SALLY’S MOTHER
you don’t need that

SALLY
i’ll take care of her i’ll comb her hair every night

SALLY’S MOTHER
her hair isn’t real

SALLY
it’s real i can see it
she is beautiful i love her

SALLY’S MOTHER
you’re beautiful
you don’t need a doll

Act II

            SALLY’s bedroom

            she plays with her DOLL

SALLY
tea party then cupcake party we don’t eat real cupcakes but we imagine them and go “mmmhmm good” then bedtime then it’s Saturday morning i’ll eat breakfast probably Fruit Loops but sometimes on the weekends pancakes and i’ll paint your hair a new color i’m thinking neon green but not slime green totally different then we’re going swimming do you have a bathing suit? i’m going swimming at my friend Billy’s house you can come too if you want Billy likes dolls then another tea party then naptime then i don’t know what what do you want to do?
            the DOLL begins to fuss like a baby
can you speak?
            the DOLL cries
don’t cry little one

Act III

            nighttime

            the stairwell in SALLY’s home

            a crash is heard

            SALLY runs from her bedroom to the top of the stairs

            she turns on a light

            the DOLL is standing at the top of the stairs

            SALLY’S MOTHER is dead at the bottom of the stairs

            SALLY stares in horror at the scene

            the DOLL looks at her

DOLL
whoops

Act IV

            SALLY’s bedroom

            the DOLL talks

            SALLY is catatonic

DOLL
tea time tea time cupcake time mmhmmhmm play time yay it’s so fun sleep i’m sleeping watch me sleep i’m awake i’m hungry yum yum food in my tum tum go in water today? today in water we go splish splash in the water slime green hair pretty pretty pretty eat the pancake i’m sleepy good night cupcake time good morning

            SALLY cries

Act V

            the toy store again

            SALLY has been put inside a doll box large enough for a small child

            the DOLL wheels her into the store in a dolly

DOLL
it’s just better this way
            SALLY beats at the box
            we can’t hear her from inside it
i thought i was ready for the responsibility but i’m not
i need someone beautiful like me
            SALLY’S DOLL rolls the box with SALLY up to a customer service counter
i’d like to make a return

            the EMPLOYEE looks in the box

            she is unperturbed by SALLY’s presence inside

EMPLOYEE
do you have a receipt?

            BILLY (eight years old) sees SALLY in her box

            BILLY tugs at BILLY’S MOM’s pants

            SALLY beats from inside her box
