            a circle of LIBRARIANS around a fire

            one by one they pass a pair of scissors around the circle

            when each LIBRARIAN gets the scissors they stick out their tongue

            hold the scissors to their tongue

            snip their tongue off

            and toss their tongue into the fire 

            a MOUSE runs around the circle

            trying and failing to get the LIBRARIANS’ attention

MOUSE
the one who soils the carpet who ruins the rugs who turns the seeing eye blind with kindness whose kindness clots the cream whose cream curdles the one who withers who weathers the weather whose vengeance bubbles up and over the cauldron who spills boiling tea on the young mother’s lap who boils the seas the skies the savannahs the sun the moon the stars the fish the child the one who formed the soul and stuck you with it who rams the spikes through the innocents who coils in the garden and says it’s your fault who send the plague and says it’s your fate who burns your cities who rapes your soil who disembowels your laws who drowns your livestock who anoints your kings who builds the effigies and damns you for them who cannot see cannot taste cannot look you in your eye your eye your only roving eye who plucks your eye who calls that a blessing who runs rivers through towns hurricanes through schools who knows the end and won’t tell you when it will come the one who yields the many and tells them to respect the one the one who is one and many the one who made the cradle for the child shelter for the storm and is that enough for you? a kiss a warm blanket a hand on your shoulder is that enough? it must be yes it must be it must it must it must

            the LIBRARIANS have finished cutting out their tongues

            one LIBRARIAN holds the scissors out to the MOUSE

            he takes the scissors

            sticks out his own tongue

            considers cutting it out 

            instead he jumps into the fire

            his little mouse body burns up quickly
