Women must not wear men’s clothing (Deut. 22:5)
the PLAYWRIGHT from yesterday’s play (aka me) is still onstage
he is still wearing the sundress and the stockings and the red heels
he is frozen with his two middle fingers up
a CHORUS OF BUTCH DYKES enters in tails and top hats
they all look unbelievably hot
the CHORUS lip syncs to Fred Astaire’s recording of “Puttin’ on the Ritz”
they do a charmingly imperfect dance routine to it
the PLAYWRIGHT remains frozen
the CHORUS’s routine culminates in a kick line
at which point the PLAYWRIGHT unfreezes and joins them
the performers finish and hold for applause
the audience goes wild
a grand red velvet curtain descends
as the audience files out of the theater
they are greeted by the performers in the lobby
who pass out syringes of testosterone and estrogen
the syringes are unmarked
so no one knows which hormone they are receiving
each audience member takes their syringe home
and contemplates whether they should use it
they contemplate whether they like their current gender
do you like your current gender?
if you don’t like your current gender
there are so many options for you
so many genders to explore
you took a syringe after all
you must be curious
don’t you want to try it?
you pull down your pants
you uncap your syringe
you inject yourself in your thigh
your body begins to vibrate
your skin begins to glow
and you begin singing “Puttin’ on the Ritz”
