            a SEER stands in the town square 

SEER
in three days this city will burn 

CITIZEN
this ice cream is delicious 

SEER
we must evacuate everyone 

CITIZEN
it’s strawberry i love strawberry

 SEER
your eyeballs will melt 

CITIZEN
i should’ve gotten sprinkles
why don’t i love myself?

            the next day
            the SEER is back again 

SEER
in two days the city will burn 

CITIZEN
they’re opening a new convention center downtown 

SEER
your whole lives gone in a flash 

CITIZEN
could really drive tourism in the area

SEER
the end of everything don’t you care?

CITIZEN
i want ice cream again

            the next day 

SEER
tomorrow the city will burn

CITIZEN
you said that yesterday

            the next day

SEER
and now it is today and on this day the city will burn
i’m leaving 

            the SEER packs up their stuff

            they head out of town

            the CITIZEN gets an ice cream cone

            they lick and lick at the ice cream

            the CITIZEN begins to convulse 

            they spontaneously combust 

            they burn and burn

            from offstage fire alarms are heard

            two FRIENDS in a different city

FRIEND 1
and the next morning the whole town was gone
in every bed a pile of ash where the citizens had slept
yet nothing else burned
just the people
even the ice cream was unsinged 

FRIEND 2
ooh i want ice cream
don’t you? 

            as they exit they pass the SEER who is entering

            the SEER sets up

            they begin again

SEER
in three days this city will burn
