82: Each [person] must write a Sefer Torah

The Book of Love of God
Laws of Tefillin, Mezuza and Sefer Torah

Each [person] must write a Sefer Torah (Deut. 31:19)

a cavernous space of polished wood

            slightly sacred feeling

on the grand bare floor sits a YOUNG STUDENT

she is writing out a Torah scroll

she uses a quill and ink

on one side of her sits a stack of twelve Torah scrolls

on the other side of her is a grand wooden chest

there is nothing else and nobody else in the space

except for two OBSERVERS watching her from afar

OBERSVER 1
if she makes a single mistake she starts the whole thing over

OBERSVER 2
wow
            they watch
how many mistakes has she made so far?

OBERSVER 1
twelve

OBERSVER 2
wow
            they watch
how long has she been doing this?

OBERSVER 1
one-thousand eight-hundred and ninety-two days

OBERSVER 2
wow
            they watch
how often does she just fucking loose it?

OBERSVER 1
never

OBERSVER 2
wow

            they watch

OBERSVER 1
i don’t think she even knows what it means

            a snap

            the OBSERVERS look over

the YOUNG STUDENT has broken her quill on the parchment

            an ink stain is forming

she takes a moment to process her anger

            but doesn’t lose her cool

            she rolls up the scroll

puts it in the pile of scrolls next to her

            she gets up

            opens the chest

            pulls out a new scroll

            pulls out a new pen

            closes the chest

            sits back down

            unrolls the scroll

            and begins writing again

OBERSVER 2
wow

            END OF PLAY
