87: To rest on the seventh day

Laws of the Sabbath
To rest on the seventh day (Ex. 23:12)

            a sunny morning in the Garden of Eden

            ADAM and EVE speak to the heavens

            and GOD’S VOICE responds in booming echoing tones

            the voice is amplified and comes from everywhere

EVE
but we’re not tired

GOD’S VOICE
IT IS YOUR DAY OF REST

ADAM
we had plans today

GOD’S VOICE
FOR I HAVE GRANTED YOU THE GIFT OF-

EVE
we do not take for granted-

GOD’S VOICE
-THE GIFT OF NOT ONLY REST-

EVE
but we slept great last night

ADAM
quite refreshed

GOD’S VOICE
-BUT ALSO THE GIFT OF KNOWING WHEN TO REST-

EVE
if you need the rest-

GOD’S VOICE
I AM THE ALMIGHTY

ADAM
which seems to be a much more difficult role than ours

EVE
so if you need the rest-

GOD’S VOICE
IT IS COMMANDED

            the world is plunged into twilight

            God has gone to sleep and turned downed the lights

            ADAM and EVE sit on the ground

            they sit there for an agonizingly dull 5 minutes

            finally-

EVE
i’m bored
            they wait another agonizingly dull 5 minutes
we’re missing what’s happening

ADAM
what’s happening?

EVE
i don’t know because we’re missing it

            EVE starts to stand up

ADAM
but we have to rest
the Almighty said-

EVE
yes
            she sits back down
yes
all right then
            they wait another agonizingly dull 5 minutes
i’m still bored

            they sit in silence through the night

            until the sun rises again
